Some updates have already been posted to the project room, but I wanted to share some of the background information he shared with me to help everyone more fully understand the current situation at Grapevine Community School. Motivation to Start Grapevine Community School First of all, I was happy to find out that Josephat knows Stephen, the local representative of the Matopeni village here at Nabuur, and worked in his school for a year. He was motivated to start Grapevine Community School because of problems that he went through in his own studies. He has a strong belief that local children have great potential that can only be realized if provided a good environment in which to learn. Josephat said that he can really sympathize with the situation that many of the students are in and how they struggle to gain a good quality education. Despite the daily challenges, this is what drives him to create a better situation for others. The School Building The school is housed in a rented building with 6 total rooms, 4 of which are classrooms. Another room houses the school office and there is a room dedicated to the school caretaker. There is room in the back of the existing building to add on two additional classrooms – temporary in nature only because this is a rental property. Because there are only 4 classrooms and so many students, some of the classes must be combined. The baby class is housed in one room, the nursery & pre-unit classes are combined in another. Level 1 uses one classroom and level 2 & 4 are combined. At this time there is no class 3. There is no electricity at the school. Josephat accesses the Internet at the local cyber café. There is also no access to clean water. School officials purchase clean water weekly and store it for use at the school. It is expensive for them to purchase, but thus far they have been able to manage the expense. At this time, student fees cover basic upkeep of the school however, rent is the biggest challenge. Teachers and Student Demographics There are 5 total teachers at the school, one of which is Josephat. One teacher is trained in instructing Primary 1, 1 is trained in early childhood education, 2 trained to primary 4 and Josephat is a graduate. The primary 1 teacher is currently out on maternity leave. Josephat works full-time in the school. The students range in age from 3.5 years to 16 years of age. Some of the students wear uniforms. Others cannot afford to purchase a uniform, but the school allows them the time they need to purchase one. Instructional Materials and Feeding Program In terms of instructional materials, the teachers make charts from manila paper and they have obtained syllabus-based second-hand textbooks. They also have a few printed charts which they purchased for use with the students. Malnutrition is of great concern. To combat this, the school has instituted a simple feeding program for the students. Students pay 20 shillings to support the program and students are fed daily. Attendance Concerns and Parent Involvement There are many bright children at the school who find it a challenge to pay for even the most basic educational supplies. The school finds that these students often have attendance problems. They do not have books. This makes it difficult for them to read and write. Parents are often employed as small-scale business owners, perform housework, or work at the nearby quarry. Most earn less than $1 USD/day. Once fee balances accumulate, parents may move their children to a new school or not send them at all. Some of the parents are very invested and involved with the school in support of their children’s education while others do not care at all. Each term, Grapevine Community School officials meet with the parents to discuss solutions to the challenges faced by the school. Josephat said that he hopes that Nabuur can help link the school to organizations that can help support the development of their school so that they can in turn provide education of the highest quality to the children of their community. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of talking directly with Josephat via chat and found out more information about the school. Some updates have already been posted to the project room, but I wanted to share some of the background information he shared with me to help everyone more fully understand the current situation at Grapevine Community School.

Motivation to Start Grapevine Community School

First of all, I was happy to find out that Josephat knows Stephen, the local representative of the Matopeni village here at Nabuur, and worked in his school for a year.

The School Building

The school is housed in a rented building with 6 total rooms, 4 of which are classrooms.

Teachers and Student Demographics

There are 5 total teachers at the school, one of which is Josephat.

Instructional Materials and Feeding Program

In terms of instructional materials, the teachers make charts from manila paper and they have obtained syllabus-based second-hand textbooks. They also have a few printed charts which they purchased for use with the students. Malnutrition is of great concern. To combat this, the school has instituted a simple feeding program for the students. Students pay 20 shillings to support the program and students are fed daily.

Attendance Concerns and Parent Involvement

There are many bright children at the school who find it a challenge to pay for even the most basic educational supplies.

All the best,

Jennifer

P.S. Josephat, I composed this update based on notes I had from our conversation. If I missed anything or misunderstood something you told me, please let me know so we can correct it.

Kenya, Njiru Sewage Slums/Village.

I wish to take this opportunity to share this progress information with the Sewage slums neighbors,
the nabuur team and other interested friends.
We closed school on Wednesday and started construction work immediately.
We are currently putting up the front wall to enhance security of the school properties.
This is expected to be complete by Tomorrow.
Construction work for the toilets starts on Monday 1/8/11.
It will probably take 4days.
We hope that they will be complete before Monday 8/8/11 when pupils report back for Tuition.
I will post end of term Exam results once they are compiled.

--
we are a community school in Njiru district.
We are focused in providing access to Quality education to the
poor, orphans and other vulnerable children in sewage slums and its environs.
