We need someone that can help us find three organisations that have expertise (and maybe fund) building of low-cost latrines in India. The organsiations need to be contacted to ask if they are willing to share their expertise with us.
Project: Construction of Latrines in Sikharpa

Hello Rewati and all other Neighbours,
I am the new Facilitator for Sikharpa. I have made changes in the Steps and Tasks and I invite you all to make a contribution to one or more of them! :-D
I will be away for 2.5 weeks for a trip to India. In the meantime Romina Oliverio (romina@nabuur.com) will take over my duties. Sorry, trip was already planned before I became Facilitator... :-?
Rewati is also available for any questions you have about the project. I will be back on september 25th and hopefully I can close of a Task or two and post a result!
To all of you Neighbours, if you come across a result.....you can post it on our results-page!
Bye for now
Claudia Vijge
Dear Rewati, Claudia and Romina
I put some basic information on toilets, especially composting toilets, here:
http://www.ourcongo.net/life.htm
I have, use and maintain a small composting toilet. It is approved by local health authorities. It is not too difficult to manage and keep healthu if people do the right thing. The elements of design are not complex. The product is of great value in agriculture.
best wishes
Dennis
Dear Dennis,
Thank you very much for your contribution. I will see all these resources, which you put in here.
Regards,
Rewati
Dear Rewati and All,
Namaste !
Rewati, in our disccussions and contributions until March 2007 we had already some results. Do we have to re-start again ? It will be time consuming if we will start from zero again. For the information of everybody, we can post these info that can be used as a platform to take-off.
The design of ventilated latrine is already available. What we need is to execute the plan/design. Off course, budget is the still the main issue. What if we construct 1 or 2 latrine for public use; ie. school and/or in multi-purpose hall. This will have a great inpact to the on-going awairness campaign and to convinced funding organizations that we are serious.
The design is not that expensive at all. Dry or wet type latrine's are common in developing country (rular district). This is also true in my country, the Philippines. We also use this latrines as temporary facilities during construction.
Our main difficulties/struggle before is the development of a project proposal for funders. Fortunately, we have team of nabuur experts with tons of resources and conections elsewhere like Angelina, Ken, Dennis, Jun-jun, Romina and Claudia.
What do you think Rewati ?
Regards to all !
Rafael :-)
Dear Rafael,
Tahnk you for your contribution. Yes , I am fully agree with your ideas. Latrine design is already available. I have 2-3 types of latrine model, which was design for sikharpa village by EWB/Nepal Engineer.
I think now we have to move to another steps(proposal writing)and to fonf out funding agencies. So we all have to do contribution to make a proposal for funding agencies.
Regards,
Rewati
Dear Rewati
You will appreciate the big problem, that work from an earlier time is not visible.
There are no resources, no wiki for this discussion. The facilitator needs to provide that if anyone else is to be encouraged here.
sincerely
Dennis
Dear Dennis Argall,
I did not understand "the big problem, that work from an earlier time is not visible". Would you like to tell me more about that please ?
In my last post, I mean - now our efforts should be towards to find out the funding agencies to implement the latrine building project in Sikharpa village.
Regards,
Rewati
Dear Rewati
The problem is mine- in that I cannot see earlier work by you and discussion... Is it in a resources section somewhere?
best wishes
Dennis
Dear Rewati, Dennis & Rafael,
I am back from my trip to India. Satisfied but tired and getting back to work now.
Do you still have the documents about the different types of latrines, Rewati. If so, can you post them in the discussion or e-mail them to me so I can post them?
thank you
Claudia
Facilitator Sikarpha
Hi Dan,
I'm not sure what you mean by your posting.
Can you explain it to me?
thanks
Hello All,
I will be out of Kathmandu valleu for more than weeks due to my personal work. So in this period I am unable to post in village site. When I will return back I will continur.
Regards,
Rewati
Dear all,
sorry for jumping very late in the discussion. As Dennis mentioned I do not seem to be able to view any of the past information provided. Have you considered collecting methane from the latrines: can be used for engines, light and cooking.
here is an example of the projects
http://www.afrigadget.com/2007/03/01/bio-latrines-in-kenyan-slums/
here is another example with basic design.
http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel_library/MethaneDigesters/MD3.html
and a proposed design that I find quite convincing
http://www.builditsolar.com/Projects/BioFuel/VITABIOGAS3M.HTM
It is more expensive but a great way to value your latrines
I hope this helps,
Kind regards
Philippe
just found this initiative in India,
I think it might be worth contacting them
http://www.sulabhinternational.org/pg10.htm
For Nepal, might be worth contacting the following organization as they seem to sponsor biogas projects
http://www.correctcarbon.co.uk/projectdetails.asp?id=246
Please let me know if you would like to pursue this idea further
have a good evening
philippe
Philippe Guinot,
Good morning !
Thank you for posting. I will see the link of website which you give then I will post the comments on here.
Thank you.

Rewati
Hello Rewati and other Neighbours,
thanks to you all for your contributions. As Rewati has said, the kind of latrines has already been decided on with the community. So we need the information on those two-pit latrines. Then we can move on to another Task. Making a list of things needed for the latrines.
Rewati can you post the available info on the two-pit latrines that you already have?
thanks
