Hi there. I know it's been awhile since I have been in Vadgam, but wow, the website definitely has changed. Can't find any of the old discussions or the last message you left me Nitkin. I not even sure where to go oin order to do what you asked me to do which was to edit you "shared document often." I have been ill and am getting better now so I wanted to get back to me Nabuur villages, so here I am Nitin. Just e-mail or message me. LaVada

Hi Lavada,

Welcome back! :) I'm glad to hear from you again. I'm sorry to hear about your illness though. Hope everything's better now. :) Currently, we are planning on taking a video of Vadgam's cultural presentations and cricket matches (both will be happening on the same day). We have a videographer to help us and we need people to help us contact ex-cricketers who might want to join the cricket tournament and bollywood celebrities who might want to dazzle the crowd with their presence. :) Hope to see your posts in Vadgam again! :) I'm glad to hear from you! :)

2.Do other members understand the social culture in vadgam?

3.I would like to have basic information about Vadgam-Agriculture land ,Cropping pattern,Animal Husbandry and Bafallo -Cow-Goat-Sheep population ?

4.How many families involved in supplying Milk to Banas Dairy?

5.How many women knows Traditional Gujarati

6. Possibilities for Diamond Cutting and Polishing Unit at Vadgam?

we can further discuss /I can advise something based on these basic information if provided by the Local representative.

Hi Atul Bhatt,

Thank you for your questions. I must admit that they are indeed very good questions and I am confident that these will lead us somewhere that would ultimately develop the Vadgam Village and the families in this particular village.

Right now, we are taking things one step at a time - starting with the Sports Club for the youth. We are currently doing a fund raising activity to raise money for the development of the sports club.

If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I'll answer as best as I could. :)

Hi Anna!
It is Nice to note that you are the facilitator for Vadgam village.

Anna & Nitin! to me sports activities for rural development like Hot Air balloon to see your own land from the sky be introduced as one of the sports activities so that every one come forwards to see his/her land and participate in developmental activities.

Try to organise hot-air balloon spots activity in the village than see the impact of it. What ever the hassle the villagers’ have will be resolved on fast tract.

Keep in touch
Vijay

Hi Anna: I am finally, again, getting back into the world of Vadgam after such a long hiatus. How can I help at this time? I don't know anything about cricket and teams, but I am willing to try to help out with finding whatever it is that you need with this task. I've read the past discussions and see that alot has happened. You have had some very hardworking neighbors. I just hope I can be one again. LaVada

Hi Vijay,

This is good idea! Have you ever organized a fundraising hot-air balloon? How were you able to do it? Did it work?

Hi Lavada,

Welcome back! I'm glad to see you're back! :)

Yup, we've had a lot of help from all these brillant neighbours. I'm really glad they decided to join. I'm glad you decided to join.

Right now, we're trying to fix our budget, we're figuring out if we could sell drinks and food during the tournament, and we're trying to invite cricket players and bollywood stars for the tournament. Maybe you can help us with any of these. :)

Hoping to see your posts! :)

Poonam & Anna,

I have a friend in Kampala, Uganda, who has started a computer club and soccer team for orphans. He might be able to give you insight into things you might do. Here is his email & a website contact. He has other websites too, but I have to send those to you later. He is quite a prolific and active person, so I am sure he would be a good resource. He received funding from outside sources to support his project.

The "NABUUR" letter I received from you indicated that you are need someone who can "researching and create child development programmes that will help the children learn about basic things like nutrition, hygience, education etc." This is my area of expertise. I am finishing my doctorate's degree in educational curriculum and development. Maybe I can help!

I look forward to hearing from you.

Brenda :-)

Dear Neighbours,

From September until December 2007 this Villages was featured amongst others. The purpose of featuring these Villages was to find out how Villages on NABUUR could get results quicker and more predictably.

Results
Most of the Featured Villages experienced an influx of Neighbours by being featured. The majority of the Local Representatives was happy with the increased activity in their Village. Though in most cases the defined results were only partially achieved. Reasons for that were according to some Local Representatives that their goals were too ambitious, others found out their goals had to be redefined. Results that depend on finding (larger amounts of) funds are most difficult to achieve.

Predictable
Based on the feedback of the Local Representatives, the following conditions seem to be good indicators for success:

- To achieve results a project should have a clear focus and small, concrete steps;
- There should be a local team in place;
- Specific activities attract more volunteers than planning issues;
- Finding funding or sponsors is still a difficult issue that many villages encounter;
- Being featured attracts Neighbours but visible community involvement is crucial;
- Regular discussions and updates are necessary to maintain an active group.

Because featuring of villages seem to be a useful tool, there will be another round. This time the focus will be on defining the project with a clear focus and small, concrete steps.

The lessons learned are input for the redesign of the NABUUR website.

Warm regards,

Gerdie Schreuders

I have received an email asking me to help the village which I want to do. I need to explain several points.

I can help with the farming. I teach organic, 0-till farming in permanent beds using bucket drip irrigation. There is unlimited proof it works. The farmers can double their yields and reduce their labor by 50%. I taught workshops for three weeks in India some four years ago.

This does not require any fund raising. I do not raise funds for any village or project.

Someone needs to find one or more farmers in the village who are willing to change their farming methods to increase their income. One or the group needs to construct a demonstration bed as follows.

I want the bed made and taken care of before I help in any other way. If you will email me a postal address, I can mail you a dvd on farming. If the bed is made and taken care of and other farmers build one on their farms, I will mail you seed for new crops such as spaghetti squash, sweet maize, popping maize and sorghum [India], etc.

Build a Demonstration Bed

Healthy soil produces healthy plants, with high yields, to have healthy people and prevents most disease, pest, weed and erosion problems.

This bed will demonstrate to people that this really works.
1. Mark off a bed 2 meters wide and 5 meters long. Can be any width or length.
2. Do not dig or till the bed. Cut down any weeds, etc and leave on top of the soil.
3. Plant a green manure/cover crop [seed are available in every country] in the bed. Irrigate using a drip line[s] if it is the dry season. I will tell you how to make the dripline out of poly tubing and a plastic pail. Dripline is 100 feet and irrigates one row of vegetables using 40 liters of water every other day. Cost in Nicaragua was US$3. Can be moved to another row of vegetables.
4. Let the gm/cc grow until time to plant a food crop. Cut the gm/cc down level with the soil, so it dies, and leave it on top of the soil.
5. Open up rows [4?] in which to plant a crop [maize?] or clear small areas [6 inches round] to plant agusi, tomatoes and/or squash, etc.
6. Harvest. Leave plants on top of the soil.
7. Do not dig or till.
8. Mulch the soil with dead grass, leaves or any organic material.

Another way is to plant maize and when it is 300 to 400 cm tall, plant Mucuna [or other gm/cc such as Lablab, etc] between the maize plants. When the maize is harvested, leave the stalks standing. The Mucuna will grow and climb up the maize stalks and cover the ground. When it is time to plant the next crop, cut the Mucuna off at the ground and leave on the soil. Plant the next crop in the Mucuna.

This demonstration bed will prove to everybody that this works. No hoeing, no digging, no tilling!

I will help every step of the way. All you have to do is email me.
