Welcome to Vijayapuram! Please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you. We look forward to reing your posts.
Hi Carolyn, Joseph and all the other neighbours,
My name is Priyaa and I’m based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. I am a lawyer practicing at Chennai. Apart from specializing in corporate-commercial, business, intellectual property and technology laws, a lot of my work has revolved around environmental and corporate social responsibility issues. I’ve got a masters degree in human rights law.
I’ve always wanted to continue to do what I do for a living at the same time share my skills, knowledge and ideas to make a real difference and a lasting impression on the lives of people living in the toughest of circumstances.
I do appreciate the effort and time dedicated by all the neighbours on Nabuur in helping overcome obstacles and impediments faced by people across the world.
I’m afraid my skills are purely lawyering skills which would mean that I am extremely strong at research, writing, negotiation and everything else that comes with being a lawyer. But I know do want to help no matter how insignificant my contribution might be.
I consider myself blessed to have found opportunities to make my contribution through Nabuur. Also I believe I will learn and gain new skills, witness fresh approaches to all sorts of situations, and acquire greater knowledge and experience to draw up on in the future through my interaction with other neighbours. I do hope to join other projects as well and contribute my skills and knowledge to make a difference in the lives of others.
I did read through your project purpose and wish to get involved and contribute to achieving this task. Please do let me know how I can help.
I do hope to hear from you soon
Priyaa
Hello Priya- welcome to Nabuur and an even bigger welcome to the village of Vijayapuram! Thanks ofr joining us. It's great that yu have introduced yourself and told us about what you do. Your set of skills are always needed on Nabuur- that's for sure.
I had the great pleasure of travelling through Tamil Nadu in November 2009 and I loved your it
(despite the heat!) Oh it goes without saying the food in Tamil Nadu was delicious!
At Vijayapuram we are in a position where we have to try and ramp up the work that Joseph and his community have started. I will be posting their 6 month report on their pilot project here very soon.
In order to continue the work here we need to find some funding for a small second hand van so that there is a safe way of transporting the elderly to hospitasl and doctors. This is a priority. We also need to build up a set of resources that can be used bythe volunteers to make the quality of life for the elderly bed ridden patients. This can include things like water beds, nutritious food suppliments, medicine etc.
I'd like to encourage you to keep an eye on this Village here at Nabuur and jump in and help in anyway you can.
Welcome again!
Carolyn
First and foremost Caroline, I appreciate all the time and effort put in by you, Joseph, Bram and all the other neighbours to come thus far with the project. I will try and shop around for funding agencies that might be able to help us with our next step.
Priyaa
Thank you Priyaa! We would appreciate your help. The problem of looking after elderly (poor) people is not going to go away. Without adequate aged-care facilities in Kerala and a government-led approach to dealing with geriatric care, this problem will continue to grow. India too is facing the problem of n ageing population and all the problem that come with that,
Hope to hear form you again!
Carolyn
Hello Priyaa,
First of all welcome we may welcome you to our project Medical Home Care Service. Thankyou for your good comments and efforts to share ideas with our facilitator madam Carolyn. We also thank you for your good response to our project.
Madam Carolyn and Dr. Bram helped us a lot by sharing their ideas, guidelines and advices.
We hope that persons having same views and ideals will be able to achieve great things with their collective efforts. Thank you for your good mind.
Think that you know well about the Indian situations in regard to the miserable conditions of the chronically ill patients especially the Alzhimers and related disorder diseased once. The long term treatment for the chronically diseased persons will in course of time make their families very poor and debtors. So also some families will lose their residential places due to the longterm treatment of their dear once. This is a very miserable conditions. In order to help such poor families and patients we have started a pilot programme for six months, according to the advice of madam Carolyn. It was some what successful. My personal experience was the main factor to start such a programe. But we have not enough funds to help the deserved patients. We are trying to collect some funds to provide the poor patients with nutritious food medicines and medical materials etc. Now our main problem is the lack of a four wheeler to carry the very serious patients to the hospitals as well as to visit the bed ridden patients at their homes. For this reason we are unable to develop our project. We wish that in future we will be able to have one four wheeler with the support of some philanthropist like yours self.
Thanking you

Hi Carolyn, Joseph,
I do apologise for not mailing sooner.
There seem to be quite a few charitable trusts and community foundations that we might be able to approach to help us with our project like for example the Asian Paints Charitable Trust, the Concern India Foundation or the Bhansi Lal Memorial Trust. Please do have a look at the following website:
http://www.voice4india.org/2009/09/27/funding-agencies-in-india-for-ngos...
http://www.ngosindia.com/fa/index.html
http://74.125.153.132/search?q=cache:http://nird.ap.nic.in/clic/funding....
My suggestion would be for us to look up the list of agencies available in the above sites and perhaps write to them.
Carolyn, please advice on how we could proceed.
Regards
Priyaa
Hi Priyaa- thanks so much for offering these suggestions. These three organisations are ones we have not yet looked into so I think investigating them will be a good start.
I would be very grateful for any help in doing this research- I too will look at them too. Lets report back what we have found within a week.
Thanks again
Carolyn
Hi Carolyn, Joseph,
I’m really sorry I couldn’t touch base with you guys sooner. But here’s some information I wanted to share with you. You must’ve heard of WOCKHARDT Foundation. They are a non-profit based out of Mumbai. Now Wockhardt’s work spans various medical areas. What I believed to be most noteable of their achievements was joining hands with a Mumbai NGO - Sanjay Nirupam Helpline - to serve the underserved sections of the society deprived of medical needs due to ignorance & lack of financial support. What is noteworthy here is that the NGO has so far diagnosed and administered more than 40 million patients through its Mobile Medical Unit. I was wondering if we could approach them with our requirement of vans (not necessarily mobile medical units) for our project.
I managed to get hold of the phone number of the programme co-ordinator of Wockhardt’s HIV programme through one of my contacts. In fact it was he that suggested that I speak with this gentleman. I will be calling him over the next couple of days. I will keep you informed of the outcome.
I was also given to understand that the ‘India Association of Palliative Care’ is quite supportive and helpful of projects like the one in Vijayapuram. Likewise, Jeevodaya (a hospice for Advanced Cancer Patients in Chennai). I’m at the moment trying to get their contact details. As you must be only too aware of how things work around here. Getting to these through someone that has the right contacts in the organisation would help us get if not positive at least luke warm response and also perhaps more leads on how and who else we could approach.
I will keep you informed of the outcome of all of the above.
I do this is in order. Carolyn and Joseph please give me suggestions on how I could go about with the above organisations.
Regards
Priyaa
Hello Priyaa,
Thankyou for participating in our discussion. We have great hope to achieve something from your efforts. We entrust you to have a contact with Sanjay Nirupam Helpline for a four wheeler to our charitable organization. Thankyou for your investigation in this matter. We entrust you to we in contact with the above organization. We hope that they will surely help us in this matter. Without a four wheeler we are unable to proceed with our work. We are looking forward for help. I think that we will be successful in this field.
We think that we will be able to achieve this aim with the help of your personal contacts. You can easily help us with your high contacts. I hope that you will do the necessary.
Madam Carolyn also has helped us to achieve the six months programme successfully. Now also she is pending a lot of time for this project.
Madras and Kerala are near places so it is easy for us to being contact with each other. I think that you will surely help us in this matter.
We think that we will be able to achieve a good result in the near future .
Thanking you
