Help to secure a bicycle - Fundraise in your local bike shop

The youths need one or more bicycles to get water for the vegetable project and to go to town to sell their arts and crafts and soon their veggetables. They do not have a bike yet what means that for each way they have to pay a bus or a taxi.
For this task we are looking for fundraising ideas or organisations that would be able to sponsor a bike. A used bike costs around 40 USD and a new one around 75 USD.
Update: We are very grateful for the donation by one neighbor to buy a bike. The youths should soon get it.
However, it would be good to further investigate ways to find another bike.
Neighbors, it might be an idea to ask in your local bike shop to put there a box with the Wakitaka logo and some explanations for donations. Anyone interested to help with this?

Hi Emmanuel,
I just came across a comment by Mary about a bike sponsorship-program in Jinja.
http://www.bspw.org/bspw.html Maybe you could pass by there the next time you are there and ask if they could help you.
best,
Maria
As they are near Jinja, they could try talking to Bicycle Sponsorship Project & Workshop (BSPW) http://www.bspw.org/
I do not know how they select the people who receive bikes from them, simplest answer may be for Emmanuel to give them a call and find out.
(We tried for Masaka but as far I know their Local Rep never got an answer from BSPW, but he is on the other side of the country so was not able to visit them. If Emmanuel is able to get any general info on whether they work in other parts of the country that would be great!)

I'd also see if you can get help in Jinja to build a cart that will carry more jugs of water at one time. I sent you info - I'm sure you can get someone in town to help - the parts should only be about $20 USD

Hi everybody,
Emmanuel tried to find the bike association Mary and I found. But he could not find the location. Let´s search again, and figure out if they changed the adress, and if there are maybe other associations that could help.
Maria
Oh that's a pain, apologies if the information I posted was not accurate, but have not been able to find any alternative details. Did he try emailing or phoning them?

Interesting Mary - you sent the right information back on May 13 - I guess there was no follow up???? and, since they are in Jinja - they need to try to call first to see if there has been a change in address.....

I have sent them an email (also to their German partners) for further information. I´ll keep you updated on their answer.

Hi,
update:
Bspw finally replied:
Hello Maria,
Sorry that we couldn't reply to you immediately,I suggest that you
visit our project and we can have a discussion.
We are located on plot 5, Nyenga road, Opposite St Noah Mawaggali, in
Njeru Town Council, not far Jinja town.
You can board taxis going to Mbikko-Nile, board off, at Nile
Breweries, you can easily find the place, just a few meters from the
main road.
You will be assisted.
Yours Kyambadde Edwards.
this is the answer I´ve got from their German partner organisation (bspw in Uganda did not answer so far..)
thank you for your request. Our workshop is located close to Nile Breweries at the Highway Jinja-Kampala. You can also send your request to bspw@bspw.org by email. The team of BSPW will give you more informations.
Emmanuel, is this the same adress you went to?
best,
Maria
I went to www.bspw.org and it opened immediately. Go to http://www.lightfootcycles.com/ and look at the working bicycles being made here in the USA.
A bicycle in one of the African countries is being made of bamboo.
hi...
if you can send the details about the route which they follow for arranging their food etc.
i have an idea why we not use trolley on the back of the bicycle....a single person can easily drive that vehicle.
thanks

AKASH KUMAR MANDAL
Hi,
A quick update on the bike task. One of the youths went to the BSPW bicycle association and got in contact with the director. They offered to give them a bike, for which the youths only have to pay half the prize (how much would this be Emmanuel? I forgot to ask...). But they first want to see the project and will therefore visit Wakitaka in the next weeks.
Aksh, thanks for your kind offer. Indeed we discussed the issue of a trolley and neighbours gave some very useful plans how to build one. But at the moment the youths are first of all looking to get a bike at all. They then should discuss again if they need a trolley or not and how to build it. Hope you could help them then with your ideas.
best,
Maria
Akash - can you please explain yourself a little more here? the boys are carrying water jugs to the plants which are quite heavy, not food; and yes, the roads are bumpy, which I guess is why you think they shouldn't use a trolley??? and what means "a single person can easily drive that vehicle"?

Hi Everyone,
On Sunday 27th September, the youth officially received their bicycle. One of the women youth leaders in the village officiated the function. They were very delighted to receive it.Thanks so much for the input.
