Help to set up bucket drip system and vegetable growing project
Status:

Step:
2
Some of the youths of Wakitaka also want to start vegetable growing. They are planning to rent a 1/2 acre land to do it. They are also planning to use the bucket drip system for water. Help them to find out which vegetables to grow, how to achieve the best results, how and when to sell them.
Update: This task has been accomplished. But further updates and advice are welcome.
Project: Wakitaka vilage

Thank you - yes, the Chapin system is the one Ken and I have been talking about. I have emailed Dick (Chapin) to find out the cost of shipping 10 sets of 100 foot hose - the cost of the hose and couplings in only $64 - but i am awaiting the shipping price. The boys won't need the whole shipment, and I would like to sen some to two families I have 'adopted' in Kyomya.

Greetings Emmanuel,
Question, Do you do "online purchasing". Organisations such as Zhejiang Hongchen Irrigation Equipment Co.,Ltd, World Trade,Shindong Moolsan Corp, seemed have global sales reps in Uganda.
Let me know so I can do further research.
Cheers

Dear Grey - we need information on their costs for the materials and their shipping - then we can compare it with our info from the US - also, I know there are outlets in Jinja, and I am awaiting their info. Do you have their websites?

Greetings from the south Pacific Virginia,
The Center for Irrigation Technology is also aglobal corporation. I notice that you guys got good technology and better access to the internet. It concerns me that the basic equipment and materials such as bucket irrigations and other things are not readily available to speedup these projects. May be we should examine the possibility of establishing a local organisation central for all nearby areas to focus on raising funds to buy and manage these equipments and machineries to help implement the project. Particularly agriculture, village education projects. Surely there must be some local firms the government can contract out these commercial serivices to help the population. Worth looking into with the rest of the leaders. Contact details below for Center for Irrigation Technology.ARC Irrigation and SNE Global Market Place.

Dear Ginger and Ken,
Thank you so much for all the effort you put into the bucket drip kit finding. I really hope that there is a not too expensive solution. Given that it seems that several communities in Uganda are following-up on the system, one really should think about how to establish long-term contacts and/or a local presence of any provider of this kind of material in Uganda.
I also wanted to share a thought, which Sonja brought up in the last chat with Emmanuel. She actually read somewhere that people also use plastic bottles as tubes. Have you ever heard about this, Ken?
best,
Maria
Hi everyone - suffice it to say, Ken here IS the expert. :) And, sure, it would be nice to set up a factory in Uganda to manufacture the hose, but we have trouble raising money for calendars!!! My goal has been to make a successful farming plot with the bucket drip - several if I can - then bring it to the govt.and/or funding foundations. I think that is the only way. If we prove that we Can do it, that we Prove the increased yield, and that we can Pay back the expense, then we can get someone interested. Someone suggested we need a manufacturing plant. Absolutely! - But I'd put my money first into malaria net manufacturing -
I am awaiting the shipping costs, and David from Kyomya's source. I'm on it every day. The companies listed below are for PVC and/or do not come up.

Hi everybody,
sorry I didn't tune in for a long time, I am really busy with finishing my study (I'm in my final Master year). But now I'm a have some time again. So I did do some research and found a beglium couple who are living in Uganda and implementing the bucket drip system. I did send them an E-mail about the possibilities to buy hoses in Uganda. Hope they will send a response soon. I will let you know. Then I did also found a scientific article about bucket drip systems in Africa. They did use a cheaper system with plastic rice bags instead of buckets. Maybe it's also a possibility for Wakitaka to try, Ken what do you think about it? Warm regards, Lotte
Thanks Lotte for this great initiative. I just had a look on the document, and the idea with the plastic bags seems good. But I think the main problem Emmanuel had was finding the pipes - please correct me if I am wrong. And it seems that even in this example they use hose pipes or something similar. I looked a bit around on the internet, and I found one paper where they discribe how to start with plastic bottles making little holes in it and putting one at each plant. http://www.soilforlife.co.za/docs/biophile/Biophile%205.pdf It is probably much more work and in the long run ineffective, but I am wondering if the youth could not start their veggies in this way while waiting for a solution for the pipes.
Ken, what is your opinion on all this.
warm regards,
Maria
I know the pipes are the problem, so I asked the Belgium couple how they did get them, now I am waiting for their reaction. I just came across the bag system. They are cheaper then buckets, but you would still need hose pipes. Other option is to ask backpackers or travelers who are going to kenya to take hoses with them for the project. I know their is a website where you can ask backpackers to take things with them, but I can't remeber the name. The plastic option you found is to fragile, I think.
