Help to set up bucket drip system and vegetable growing project

Status: In progress
Step:
2

Some of the youths of Wakitaka also want to start vegetable growing. They are planning to rent a 1/2 acre land to do it. They are also planning to use the bucket drip system for water. Help them to find out which vegetables to grow, how to achieve the best results, how and when to sell them.

Update: This task has been accomplished. But further updates and advice are welcome.

Thanks for that. I need confirmation from the man himself onsite. I gladly withdraw my concern.

Leutele - before leaving for Jinkfun - can you please answer my question about goats with HIV???? This was a very scary thing you posted on this site and upset a number of us - and then you never answered. Whose goats had HIV? this is something I have never heard of.
re: the soil - I had taught Emma everything about 'no till' to preserve and strengthen the soil, but then Emma was not there on site when the boys went ahead and tilled the land -something they should NOT have done; something I have been trying to get through to Anyone in Uganda who will listen., But it's been done... Hopefully they can chop down something that they can use as to put over the seedlings - Ken, if they have any legumes that have been picked, could they chop them down and place over the alleys or plants??? Thanks

Since the soil has been tilled. No big deal. Just do not do it again. Add any legume or anyother organic matter to the soil for a mulch between the rows of vegetables. Most farming problems are solved by adding organic matter.

Goats with HIV. Where is the proof?

Hi Neighbors,

Thanks for your contributions and I am sorry for not replying your messages in time especially the issues raised by Leutele. The problem that the vegetable project is facing so far is that once the cabbages developed folliage, the birds began eating them up. This is something that is upsetting the youths. May be Neighbors can advise on this.

Regarding prevention of soil erosion, the youths have added organic matter to the soils and are yet to start mulching the soil between rows.

Regards,
Emmanuel

Hi Leutele,

Thanks for your contributions but I haven't heard about any incidence of goats with HIV in Uganda or any other part of the World!!! May be you can give us the source of the information for reference.

Regards,
Emmanuel

If you can find a very fine mesh - wire in town, you can cover the plants - there is a product called environmesh - you'll have to see if it is local - but for emergency, maybe a thin plastic over - what do you think Ken - I don't see you weighing in yet.

Do you have a shotgun????

Here, there is a simple solution. In the rare times this happens, we use bird netting. I believe in using as little imported things as possible. I have no other ideas. Chicken wire or anything you can cover the plants with that has as large holes as possible but small enough the birds can not get through it.

Plastic sheeting will raise the temperature on the plants.

I went to www.dirtdoctor.com and www.invinsiblegardener.com and found one thing: use aluminum foil strips hung from branches in area. Scares them away I hope?
Since they are afraid of people, in years past some people have used a "scarecrow" which is clothes stuffed with something and on a post. Birds thinks it is a human which scares them off.

Hello Emmanuel,

One way of getting your attention. I want to speak to Emannuel. And I hope with respect that this is Emmanuel that I am talking to now. Because I respect you Emmanuel after all you I believe is from the location where all is happening. Right. Way back, early stages of my requests for Jinkfuin Project Estimation Cost, that was the time I got this Estimation cost: It freak me out just to see the mentioned of "testing for HIV" . This is attached to Emmanuels explaination on Nabuur Site. If Emmanuel himself reply to me I would have discussed this alot earlier.

But having said this, I strongly suggest that any annimal that is sick or suspected to have such diseases should be put down immediately. Remember, people consume things from these animals. I wont even bother testing it. Just burn the animal to ashes and dont just bury them because people reuse the earth. Now this is what I want to say. Do not waist the time breeding the dam sick animal if there is a slight chance that it may have a viruse not matter what virus.

Emmanuel this is the reason that I suggested a very useful way of getting some animals by designing an appropriate project with the help of the government under dplsmci. No wonder your people are sick from these diseases. Now here is the deal, even if those animals did not have HIV - this is something you can look at longterm hence the suggestion for a better animal strategy.

Please look into the situation immediately and visit Teh in Jinkfuin have a discusion with him. If you have difficulties coming through for communiation. Sort your commuincation channels with Teh. I love you Emmanuel and uderstand where I am coming from. The document is attached below. Read it and then read the space inbetween lines to understand my message. If there is no need forget that I ever raise the issue. Blessings.

Hi Emmanuel,(should I comment or not)

There are strong nylon very finely knitted wired type of product colured black or clear that the boys can use. I think they come in rolls and may be both longterm and shorterm solution is to place an order from a agriculture or hardware shop in Cameroon or make enquiries with the West African Agriculture, Horticulture and Fishery Department to see if they can supply you with those things and I am sure there shouldnt be a problem. What you and the guys may need to do is take measurements from the boundary of the vegetable patch and perhaps work out the parameter. Then go to a hardware shop and they should have a variety of those farming covering products you need. And take the costs. Now this is the reason I have asked Teh and the UN creating a Card for DPLSMCI. For further information talk to Teh. This card works for people like you that will be specially approved by the UN, Government of Africa and Teh's Goodness and Merch Mission in Jinkfuin for the purpose of smoothing out and identifying people like yourself. This is all explained under Jinkfuin Code. Hence Integration. The project starts 30 July.

If you need further information see Teh and the Projcet documents already published.

Please, do your homework before giving advice about sick animals. There is no danger in burying dead animals. Most animals who get sick will not have a disease or sickness that requires their being destroyed. That is extremely rare.

I was shocked that there was a statement about goats and HIV. Such statements could bring disrespect for any thing said in the future.

I have lived/taught in five African countries and I did not have an office. I was working with subsistence farmers. I have great respect for them. They have centuries of experience. They do so much with so little. They were doing a good job of farming until the salesmen from the agro-chemical corporations came along, both in Africa and every other country. They sold them, with government help, products that killed their soil. They have learned their lesson and returning to organic farming.

Leutele - I still do not know where you are getting your information from - there are NO reports of Goats having/transmitting any HIV - anywhere in the world. If there are any REPORTS -medical ones - please do send them to us, like I asked you before. What you have attached to your letter is Emmanuel's budget - and there is nothing 'to read between the lines' - the goats are fine - Wakitaka is fine, and Emmanuel doesn't wear skirts! Hope this makes you happy.

Thanks Ken - we seem to be getting very unusual comments lately..... this used to be a pretty tight and intelligent village! And, might I add, the fastest growing one with farming, goats, chickens and arts and crafts off the ground in, what? 4 months??? Thanks for the backup - i think it is VERY scary to post info without real knowledge.

Dear Leutele,

As the facilitator of the village, I just wanted to underline what Ken and Ginger said - the village works really well and there is no need to worry about the animals. They are in good health - you can convince yourself by looking at the pictures under "gallery".
It would be good if you could abstain from posting comments that are not true and lack any evidence because they disturb other neighbours and made us lose some time by asking around about HIV goats (that do of course not exist).
So please, you are more than welcome to participate in the discussion and to comment and give advice on the topics, but please read before where we are with the project and what the matter is.

best,
Maria
