Status: In progress

Please post your ideas/advice here that you have for the project, if there is not a task for it already. The project has started very recently and is looking for further ideas of income generation and training.

Imagine a 1 centimetre by 1 centimetre space on paper which is crammed with the following - WYDG + Wakitaka Youth Development Group + hands + bricks + faces - and ultimately all that can be seen will be a blur, or a smudge of black color. None of the features will be visible to the normal eye. This creates a basic doubt - perhaps what the youth are looking for is not a logo, but only a conversion of their sketchbook effort into a digital format on a computer, and in a size of about 3 inches by 3 inches or more. Designs in such dimensions are printed on larger surfaces like banners, etc., and are not necessarily enlargements of the logo. Vincent has been able to create a design, as posted by him earlier in the thread of the logo, which shows the bricks and the hands, and he had requested for the photos of a few youth which could be incorporated by him in the design. I guess it would be a good idea if you could request Vincent to continue with his earlier design, and the photos of the youth could be organized for him. He could complete this design in sizes of 3 inches x 3 inches, or upwards, depending upon where the clarity of the image is better. This might lead to an early completion of this task. Hi Maria,

Saw your comments about the logo in the post above - I guess the youth have not been able to understand that a sketch in a scrapbook cannot be converted to a logo without considering all the technical issues as mentioned in all my posts in the thread of the logo.

Hi everybody,

Some news from Wakitaka! Emmanuel sent some new pictures - have a look at them in the gallery, they are really nice - and it took us the whole day to transfer them, Internet was terribly slow, so hope you appreciate them :)

Emmanuel went last week to Wakitaka, but because of the death of three villagers all activity came to a halt. However, he gave the bucket drip system material to the youths and they should be able to install it this week with the material provided. Thanks again Ginger for your help!
Richard is still figuring out the possibility to share a stand at the Nile source, he will provide feedback on this to Emmanuel. For the bike, he also wanted to check in Jinja. I asked Emmanuel about the trailer, and it seems that it would not be necessary for the moment.
Chang and Vijai, the youths have not yet seen the new logos, so we have to wait for their comment some more time.

Enjoy the pictures.

all the best,
Maria

Hi Neighbors,

It’s been quite long since I last updated Neighbors. I have been quite committed and was trying to settle for my new academic year. Well on the projects side; this is the 5th week into the second phase of the poultry project. The goats are in good health and soon we’ll donate a young goat to another youth to keep the group growing in size. This will be from the first batch of the kids that were produced.

The youth expect to get better market for the chickens since they are likely to be ready for sale towards the end of the holy month for the Muslim (i.e. Ramathan). The target is Idi day when the demand is expected to be high. The profits will be used to buy another pig for another 5youth. The already secured piglet for the youth is also growing at a considerably good rate. No improvement yet in the sales of art & crafts. Same applies to farming. I failed to secure a camera but will avail the photos as soon as I get an opportunity with the camera.

Two questions: 1) are the youths just standing at the booth trying to sell, or are they going out among the tourists? Selling is a hard job - they have to be more aggressive. And maybe the prices are actually TOO LOW!!! Have they checked what others are selling similar art works for? Many tourists want a good deal - BUT! when it is too cheap they think it is not so valuable..... And were you able to make the pieces of paper to hand out to tourists that will introduce them to the website???? Very essential that someone is doing that to all the tourists. Some of the more outgoing should be directing the tourists to the booth. If this is really not a possibility with the youth, I think you should shut it down - it is costing too much money. 2) the garden. Can you be more clear on it's lack of success? we only heard about the chicken eating the cabbage several months ago. Have you not tried to reseed? Have you not tried to put up strings with plastic bags hanging that scare the birds away? Let us know where you actually are with the farm so we may come up with ideas. One thing - I'm sure the weeds have grown by now and you need NOT plow the land again, so you can protect it from floods. Another thing is - if you are unable to grow vegetables - then you may need to grow fruit trees for income generating. Someone must check out the price of smallish 5 gallon fruit trees that you can plant - and water with your drip hose. Do you grow grapefruits? My girlfriend gets hundreds off her tree each year and the tree is only 3 years old - maybe 7 feet tall.
