Support Wakitaka Youth in writing for their blog

Status: Needs urgent help
Time needed:
Half a day
Step:
1

Wakitaka Youth Project is growing, and external donors are now involved who would like to read about the different projects on the Youths´ blog.

We are therefore looking for people who:

- Support Emmanuel and the youth in writing stories for the WYDG blog http://wakitakayouths.wordpress.com/

- Write little overview paragraphes on the different projects for the blog. http://wakitakayouths.wordpress.com/projects/

- Invite friends to the WYDG facebook group http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=156029804055

- Have ideas on where to promote the WYDG blog and facebook group.

You would work closely with the project coordinator, Emmanuel, to get to know the latest from the project. If you like writing good stories, and helping thereby a great youth-led development project, please get in contact with us by replying to this task. We´ll get then back to you and can discuss all details.

Thank you very much for your help!

Emmanuel and Maria

Hi Maria

A blog sounds like a good idea, as long as items are added to it fairly regularly, and it will also be fairly easy for Emmanuel, or others in Wakitaka who have internet accessto, to update it.

A good example from a Nabuur village is http://arrowwebhospital.blogspot.com/ from Arrow Web Hospital (Nabuur Kayole-Soweto). As you can see, they have included basic information about the place in the section on the right-hand side of the screen so that people know who they are and how to contact them.

To get the right strategy, web strategists often use the so-called POST-method. It stands for People, Objective, Strategy, Technology (in that order). So the choise of technology (f.i. a blog) comes last. If you look at People first, you are talking about your target group. From what I have read about Wakitaka, tourists are the main target group. But, in my opinion, that is a too big audience. Tourists in general will not be interested in crafts or whereabouts of the Wakitaka Youth. Even tourists visiting the village will not be interested prior to the visit. But they might get interested during the visit. So, an interesting target group might be tourists who are visiting the village, and are still interested in it when they come home. During their visit they must become aware of the website/online presence/community/blog or whatever. One way to do this is: when a tourist buys a product from the Wakitaka Youth, she can become a "Friend of the Wakitaka Youth". She will be put on the mailing list and gets an invite to the online community. In the community, she gets the latest updates and can get in touch with the village. Maybe she can also talk with other tourists who have visited. On top of that she can order products. People can only join when they buy a product or have otherwise contributed to the well-being of the Wakitaka Youth, because only then you deserve the status "Friend of the Wakitaka Youth". This might be an extra incentive to buy products. Please give me your opinion. Am I diving too deep here with this stuff about the target group? I am new to Nabuur and this project, so comment is welcome. Hi everybody,

A blog is nice of course, but like Ken said in another thread: Anyone can put up a website, but to get visitors is the hard part.

Since technology allows anyone to create and host a site, this is leading to a good deal of clutter in cyber-space, since a majority of such sites are viewed only by a closed group of a few people who may not be even in the hundreds during the course of a whole year, and even the existence of most of such sites would not be known outside the closed group. Hi Peter,

My general impression is that a lot of attention is being given to merely creating a website, or a blog, even though this is not in the critical path for any of the major issues facing the group or community.

You have rightly mentioned, that creating this resource for a small audience is already a tough job. It becomes tough since the necessary resources are not employed in creating such a facility, and the stage after the website is created is left open to the prevailing situations and circumstances, since the total absence of resources does not allow any concrete action for the post-website creation stage. Hence, the creation of the site does not translate into any benefits that the owners were hoping for.

Web-dynamics is a complex issue, and the issue of viewership of sites has assumed dimensions where the owners of obscure sites are outsourcing the monitoring and traffic enhancement to third party organizations who have the necessary credibility in this area. Of course, such services come at a cost, and I do not find any evidence of such outfits active on nabuur.
