WANTED Photoshop specialist: Transform the Logo into a digital format

Status: Finished
Time needed:
Half a day
Step:
4

The youths of Wakitaka recently formed a CBO, the Wakitaka Youths Development Group. They now have drawn a very nice logo. But not having a computer, the logo has been drawn with pencils and scanned by Emmanuel (see the attachment). To be able to use the logo in the future for any communication, a website or brochure, the logo needs to be transformed into a digital format. This can be done in Photoshop for example. If you know how to do this, the youths would be grateful for your help.

Here some information about the Logo:

* WYDG stands for Wakitaka Youths Development Group
* The two hands stand for all the kinds of support offered to the youths
* In the middle of the logo are three persons working together in a team for development

Hi,

I have seen the logo as it appears in the attached .pdf file. There is a basic issue that will need to be considered. After the logo is digitized, it's size may need to be varied for printing on documents of various sizes like cards, letter-heads, brochures, etc. Even after reducing the size of the logo, all details in the logo should appear clearly visible and distinct. You may like to see the effect on visibility of detail by changing the zoom levels in your attached .pdf file. It´s great that you joined the village. For the Logo, I actually tried it a bit out in photoshop, and I think the easiest way to go about it, is to retrace the main lines with the pencil function, then to refill the spaces with the responding coulours. Like this, one can make the logo a bit more schematic, not drawing every stone, but say keeping the main lines, as the hands, people etc. The Logo can then be adapted to any size and format. What do you think about this technique (I am not a specialist, just trying to find a pragmatic solution:)? It was important that the youths were able to design their own logo, but they just have pencils, not a computer. Would you be able to do the task? You have correctly described the process to be adopted to digitize this logo. The youth have certainly done a commendable job at creating the logo and I can imagine that they must have spent long hours discussing and deliberating the final design among themselves. To take this matter to the next stage, a few technical aspects will need to be followed. The most important is that a logo is an identity of the group or organisation. Hence the logo needs to be frozen. Also, the frozen logo will then need to be printed in various sizes on different documents. The smallest size of logo that we encounter is usually on business cards, though still smaller sizes are used, like for embossing on pens. In the case of a business card, we can imagine any side of the logo to be about 1 cm long. It is this size that becomes critical, since all aspects of the logo will need to display very clearly to any person with normal eyesight, without any strain, in trying to identify the contents of the logo. Other aspects include the ease of printing. Commercial printing is usually of two distinct kinds - screen printing and offset printing. In screen printing, a block of the image is made first and this block is used to transmit the image to paper. Due to the process involved, this does not prove very effective for intricate designs. The offset printing process is a lot more expensive and suitable only for much larger print quantities, and this can produce good results for intricate designs. Other aspects for the logo include number of colors, and freezing the color specifications used, so that replication becomes easy. The cost of printing increases if we use more colors. It is important for the logo to stand the test of clarity in a smaller size, since the same logo in a larger size will certainly be clear. The existing logo has an intricate design, and may be clear in a size of 3 inches x 3 inches, but if you change the zoom level and reduce the size of the .pdf file of the logo to about 1 inch x 1 inch, or still smaller to about 1 cm x 1cm on your computer screen, you will see that the details on this logo are no more visible. The existing design in the .pdf file is more of a sketch suitable for viewing only in a larger size, and even after simplifying and reducing the lines etc as suggested by you, it will not stand the test of visibility of detail in smaller sizes. Since the youth have shown initiative in creating their own logo, they will only need to be oriented about these few technical aspects, so that they can create another design which is basically simple with minimum lines and intricacies and just one or two colors (so that it can be printed through the screen printing process which is a lot cheaper). The image can be scanned and viewed by the youth by reducing the size to at least 1 inch x 1 inch if not to 1 cm x 1cm, through the zoom option, to see if they are creating a logo which is technically feasible in a smaller size. After they are satisfied about the visibility and clarity aspects, converting to a digital format though paintshop etc will be merely a manual process and should not be an issue of concern. Hi Maria,

Thank you for the warm welcome!

I have reduced the size of the logo image, and you can see that the clarity of all detail remains intact. It is possible to further reduce the size to any reasonable level, without compromising the clarity of detail. I have also selected only two colors, so that the printing costs stay low. Printing costs will be still lower if there is only one color involved. It is possible to select any other colors instead of the red and black as at present. Hi Maria,

To make it convenient for the youth at the village to grasp the differences between a sketch and a graphic design for a logo, I have created a sample logo for WYDG at Wakitaka, and the same is attached. I have tried to recreate the theme of the sketch done by the youth in a graphic form, and of course this need not be the final design, and the youth must decide where they would want changes done in the graphic design.

Do let me know of changes required.

For example, you will always find the IBM logo in blue, and that too in a particular shade of blue. You will never find the IBM logo in red or any other color. The only exception is when the matter is printed in a single color, like a single color newspaper or magazine, where the logo would necessarily be in the same color as the text or images on the rest of the page, like black for example. Hence, irrespective of where the logo is to appear - whether on a website or in print - it must be frozen in all respects including the colors. The size may change depending on whether the logo is to appear on a large banner at a social event, or whether it is to appear on a small business card. A logo is a serious piece of business, whereas a sketch is more casual in nature. CC About the logo being an offset print or not - let me explain through a few examples. Suppose the youth decide to make business cards of WYDG. A set of cards would be about 100 or 200 in a pack. This is a small lot for printing and is usually done through the screen printing process which is a lot cheaper. On the other hand, suppose WYDG decides to go global and is organizing an event where members from a hundred countries are to participate at a common venue. For this event, as a publicity issue, WYDG may be required to print 10,000 or more brochures, leaflets etc. This large quantity will need to be printed through the offset printing process which is cheaper for such large quantities. Hence, the process of printing and the costs of printing will depend on the quantities to be printed. The same logo will need to be printed through both processes. Let me know the outcome of the discussions with the youth at WYDG. We could work on this in two stages - stage 1 - freeze the basic design - based on the outcome of discussions and re-work on the logo where required stage 2 - once the basic design is frozen - several options with different color combinations can be created, and out of these, one option can be finally selected and frozen With regards Vijai [teaser] => Hi Maria, You are right - the youth should have the final word on this, and we can merely help with the technology, and our experience. Hi Maria,

You are right - the youth should have the final word on this, and we can merely help with the technology, and our experience. About the 3 issues in your message, my opinion is as under :

AA
I could see that the hands are a critical element in the sketch made by the youth, but I had to compromise with this aspect since this element in a small size would have added to the clutter in the logo.

I want to send you two versions. 1 completely made from clip art and the other from photographs. if you know of any pictures I can obtain of some happy ugandans working on a well or just working in general id be grateful.
thanks again.
By the way im not a specialist, im more of an enthusiast, im not sure whether or not you will like my ideas but i just wanted to be clear on my level of expertise. heres where im at at the moment. I spent about 30 minutes putting it together and about an hour and a half sourcing the images.

For any logo, the worst condition of size is the SMALLEST size in which the logo is expected to be printed. In the present case, if you imagine that the smallest size of the logo is expected to be on a business card, then it is reasonably safe to presume that the smallest size of this logo will be about 1 cm on any side. All aspects of the logo will need to be clutter-free and display total clarity in this smallest envisaged size. Hence, after the basic designs are ready, the size of the logo can be reduced to about 1cm or so on the computer screen. The youth can then sit back and take a critical look at the computer screen to ascertain if all aspects of the logo are clear in the small size. If they are satisfied about the clarity on the computer screen, they can then print on paper and see the result. In this manner they can proceed step-by-step till they are satisfied that they have a final design. It may involve going forward one step and back by two steps sometimes, but is a necessary part of such an exercise, to determine the best possible option. It is important to keep trying and not give up. The issue here is not about how to resize the image since this can be easily handled for viewing the effects in different sizes through a suitable function in any such software package. In case the youth at the village have any difficulty in resizing the image to view it in different sizes, I am certain that Maria will be able to coordinate your advice with the youth at the village. The suggestions in all my posts above are purely aimed at the technical aspects on what should go into the making of a good logo, and I have even designed a sample logo and attached it with one of my earlier posts in this thread. As also emphasized in my previous posts, one of the most basic requirements that a logo must meet is that it must display total clarity in the smallest size in which it is ever envisaged to be used. In the present case, the smallest size could be about 1cm on any side of the logo, since this size is what would make it suitable for printing on a business card. Once the design is clear in the smallest size, other aspects like number of colors become an issue. The cost of printing a logo on paper in 2 colors could be 5 times the cost of printing it in a single color, and the cost of printing a logo in 4 colors could be ten times the cost of printing it in 2 colors. These are only indicative factors, and a discussion with the local printers in that area will determine the actual costs for each option of number of colors. The process of printing also becomes an issue - since a graphic design might be viable through the screen printing process in one or two colors at a much lower cost for smaller quantities, and a design based on photographic images may be viable only through the offset printing process in multiple colors at a much higher cost. The bottom-line here is that the design of the logo is not the end of the process. It is merely the beginning of several processes to which the logo is to be applied. Each process has an associated cost, and I guess costs and expenses are issues that are uppermost on everyone's agenda at all villages on nabuur. According to me, the logo design must be finalized by the youth at the village, since it is their vision that is getting digitized through their logo. Through all my posts above I have tried to drive home basic issues that impact the cost of choosing any particular design of logo. I am certain that Maria will be able to coordinate with you about any issues the youth may have about resizing and viewing the image at their end.
