Lack of livestock and food cause malnutrition
The ten-year civil war devastated the farming community of Walungu, DRC. Crops were destroyed, and animals looted. Many families fled. Those who have returned to the community subsist on cassava, potato and taro. This poor diet puts people at risk of health problems including protein-deficient malnutrition, which can cause disability and death. Security in Walungu has improved significantly since 2002. The people are now returning to their homes and beginning to rebuild their farms. As more crops are planted, health conditions are expected to improve. In the meantime, a local NGO is distributing farm inputs and guinea pigs to the most vulnerable families of Walungu to improve diet and promote better nutrition.
