Meet the neighbours

Status:

Hi everybody,
I also follow the news about Eastern Congo and the fighting downthere. I am glad to hear that the violence has not spread to South Kivu. But also I am sure that you, Guillaume, must be very worried about the present unrest. Maybe some members of your family or relatives and friends might be on the run. I sincerely hope that peace will return soon to Congo.
Bon courage,
Nico

Thanks Guillaume! Our neighbours will be happy to find out more about you :o) And we would also like to know what you like to do in your free time (except being busy volunteering for your community :o)).

Esther, could you also tell us a bit more about yourself? In Walungu we have a team of neighbours from 5 continents, very diverse in cultural and professional background, but with a common interest - to give their contribution to the development of Walungu :o)

Hi Sonja,

Sure! I live in the Netherlands, I am 34, married, and I have 3 children. I have 3 daughters, aged 7, 5 and 3. I have studied English. I was a teacher of English from 1997 until 2008 and until I decided I needed a change. So, I stopped being a teacher and I decided to go to college again and now I am studying to become a social worker. At the moment, I am working with refugees from Congo, Sudan, Kenya and other African countries as well as refugees from countries like Afghanistan and Iraq. I found out that this kind of work is what I have always wanted to do. I have recently joined Nabuur because I wanted to be able to contribute something meaningful to others around the world using my skills and experience. In my spare time, I am involved in activities organised for children during the holidays and I coordinate a babysitter service.

Dear all,

Guillaume sent me photos of some of the volunteers in Walungu (Roger, Roseline and Vincent). I posted them in the Gallery.

There are also Manu (livestock management) and Godet (architect that helped them with shed building). I have Godet's photo as well, but it's rather small so I decided not to post it now, but to wait for another one.

If anyone has any idea how to get a digital camera to Walungu it would be great! As Guillaume says, there's so much work going on (or done) in Walungu, but it's difficult to document since they don't have a camera.
It would also work if there's someone trustworthy going to DRC who could bring a camera to Guillaume (and Guillaume would order it and pay for it).

Let me know if you have any contacts/ideas.

Hi Firmin,

Welcome to Walungu, thanks for joining our village. Looking forward to working with you.

Everyone, Firmin is neighbour from Amsterdam, originally from Togo, and we met at the Nabuur Camp. He offered to create a website for Walungu and to integrate a blog where we could post newsletters. I guess we would then need to update the site with stories from Walungu, so I'll check with Guillaume if he could send us some stories on a regular basis.
Firmin, would you also like to create a facebook group for Walungu, I think it would be a good promotion tool as well?

I also met Nico in Amsterdam, it was very nice to meet face to face, we had a very nice chat in a cafe.

Hope to hear soon from Guillaume, he's in Bukavu now.

Have a nice day.

Hi guys,

Firmin, the blog looks very nice! It would be good if Guillaume gave us his comments and ideas for the blog and the website.
It would be also good to list our partners and the links to their websites (and the other way around as well).

Guillaume, thanks for the update, good to hear about the harvest. Let us know also about the goats and what's going on in the village. Say everyone hello from the neighbours.

Hi Firmin, Sonja and Guillaume - bonjour tout le monde.

The Blog looks nice. If you want to inspire yourself on what to put on the sidebar to make it more interesting for readers, you could have a look at the Wakitaka Blog www.wakitakayouths.wordpress.com. If you need any technical advice (I am not a specialist, though), let me know since some things can be a bit tricky as I experienced it myself with our blog.

Keep the good work going,
Maria
