Collect ideas for children's activities

The children who are taken care of in the centre should find an environment which inspires their learning and be offered activities to grow with. Unfortunately there is not much material available to them other than some pencils, pen, eraser, ruler and some low level english story books.
What kind of activities would you suggest would be good to stimulate the children and let them learn naturally? Please contribute to the discussion! Sabina can use any suggestions :)

Here is what Marialala suggested - and I attach the ideas from Mona, who's children attend a Montessori school!
"We could also help the children develop their personality like how to enhance their personality to lessen their shyness,by giving them more activities like, Art Competitions once a week or once every month by letting them draw their future dreams,explain what is the meaning of their drawings (since Sabina has an art class in her schedule) and in result give them prizes like drawing books and crayons,activity book with pencils-first prize we can give them the chance to lead their brothers and sisters(to be an assistant in an art lesson can make them feel proud that their responsible-we can also give them little grocies for kids like cookies and milk for their snacks each contestant for complimentary prizes to give them interest in joining the competition),second prize we can give them the prizes i said like coloring and activity books..and also,we can conduct the women a basic cooking lessons,Cooking Competitions by giving them 3 recipe (nutritous recipe like candy bar made in coconut,pudding cake made in sweet potato,banana cake,any food that is nutritous and it is available in their area and which they can sell it if they want to the tourist or people),in return they can make money...we divide them into 3 groups and give them prizes that category first,second and third prizes,for the first prize -we can give them prizes like single stove or little groceries(instant noodles,canned goods and things like vinegar,soy sauce,laundry bar,shampoo),second prizes-an cooking tools and groceries,third prizes-cooking tools and or groceries.For this affair here in our place we can only budget all these prizes $20 or 1t pesos in philippine money..Hope youll try what i shared,it is fun and memorable since i already did these things to my church before when i was in my youth i used to be a volunteer in my church as children ministry leader aside from prayers and song and dance interpretations the children and youth relly missed these kind of activity..."

Thanks for the games, William. The "Hangman game is a fun one for guessing words and for spelling practice, but the idea of hanging someone is a bit scary. So you can change it by just drawing a picture of a person without the hanging tree. If you want to make it a bit more dramatic you could draw a parachute with about 10 strings above a person or animal (who is suspended from it) and underneath a few waves to represent the ocean. Then if a person guesses wrong, you can erase a string
(or cross it out). Another idea is to draw a funny monster instead of a person.
I think it's great for you, a young person, to be helping out for the kids of Yoshinkhel. Way to go! :-)

My son attended a Waldorf preschool program and they have many activities that may be suitable for Yoshinkhel. There is much written on Waldorf schools and their philosophy (based on the work of Rudolf Steiner). The idea is based on rhythms and routines and simple toys and play (to simplify it). Story-telling is a big component as well as the use of plays. Teachers would get the children together in a circle and tell a story enacted with small toys (usually made of wool - which would tie into the woollen project elsewhere in Yoshinkhel). The stories are usually fairy-tales or folk-tales and are repeated each day with some elaboration over time. The children also engage in making some of these items - such as using raw wool and making it into balls, or dolls or other small toys. Children can also make items such as sashes, satchels, hats, etc for use in the creation in their own plays. The children learn to use their hands to make the small toys and/or costumes and then create their own stories and then enact them. This allows them to develop fine motor skills, further their imagination and creativity and engage in speaking to groups.
Other activities included other crafts such as candle-making (from beeswax sheets-not sure if they are available there); making fairies and mythical creatures; painting with natural dyes and colorants; finger knitting (very simple to learn and easy to teach - can send info if you like); and singing songs. I can send a number of songs as well if you like.

This is one activity that has been done in kindergarten to learn the English alphabet. The first letter of the first name of each student corresponds to the letter that they will teach to the class. For example, if the student's first name is Lauren, her letter is L and she will teach the class how to remember the letter L. The student will be in charge of thinking of either an animal or object that begins with that letter. A student named Lauren may pick a lion because that is an animal that begins with L. The student will proceed to show the class a lion by drawing it, or pointing it out in a picture book. This is a great way to strengthen word association for children. The time frame is up to the teacher. They can spend an entire week learning each letter, or learn one letter each day.

I know there has already been a Bingo game suggestion, but in addition to that I thought that perhaps having a game which is played outside will engage the children in a different environment and make them more aware of their surroundings? So Bingo could be played outside the classroom using outdoor landmarks (such as the following: red flower, an ant, a bird, schoolhouse, a specific tree, laughter, trash can etc.).
The child who fills out his/her walking bingo board first, wins a prize...

One of the UN volunteers who help us - and who would like to stay anonymous - has sent me the following ideas together with the file attached which collects internet resources on activities for kindergarden and pre-school children.
For ages 2-5:
-learning their own names and their teacher's name
-learning the alphabet and words in their own language
-learning parts of the body
-identifying things like houses, rooms, chalkboard, etc.
-learning to count to ten
-learning how to greet someone - eg. hello, how are you?, goodbye
-giving their "toys" a name and calling the toy by its name
-learning how to hop (like for hopscotch)
-making a circle with their arms and going in circles while singing a song
-learning how to clap
-identifying numbers in a clock
-knowing times of day - morning, afternoon and evening
-looking at the sky and identifying the sun, moon, stars, etc.
-knowing what a car is and also a bicycle
-knowing how to write words with a chalk on the chalkboard
-learning how to shake hands with someone
-waving goodbye
-making a drawing or self-portrait on the chalkboard
-also, working with another fellow child on an assignment such as reading
For ages 6-8: I would include the following:
-reading a book from start to finish
-being able to speak in sentences instead of phrases
-adding and subtracting numbers
-knowing and remembering names
-identifying animals and parts of the body
-identifying different buildings and structures
-starting multiplication and division
-writing a poem about nature or something about the immediate environment
-playing games
-playing sports in teams
-drawing
-making an object with stones or sticks
-growing a plant with some seeds
