Hi Fred
Thanks for all the information. Have you done any research to look at how many people are likely to want internet access, how much money the centre is likely to make? This will be essential in working out whether it is a viable business.
You and Paul are both in Jinja. So if you both get internet access at your centres, you will be in direct competition with each other for customers. I don't know how many people there are in Jinja wanting computer access, but this could be an issue, making it less likely that either business would succeed.
I am wondering if, instead of setting up two centres, there is any way you can work together? For example, could your members receive training at their center. With GIDDCO providing some sort of service to BEHOD (his organisation) in return?
You could then look at alternative sources of income for GIDDCO, things that may take less time and money to set up.
If you do decide to go ahead with setting up an internet cafe and/or computer training centre, you may find it helpful to talk to others who have already done so. Not just Paul, but places who have things fully up and running and are making a profit.
A while ago I put together a list of computer-related Ugandan contacts, and it is attached. It was initially for Acoke (hence slight focus on stuff in northern Uganda where they are), but I sent a copy to Paul too, so you may want to ask if he has spoken to any of them. It includes both individual centres, and also some IT-related networks in Uganda who may be able to put you in touch with members who have done what you want to do. I have not had any direct contact with any of these, have just read the information on their websites.
So you could try talking to some of these, see what advice they can offer you.
Mary
