Creating Textbooks

I’m not sure if anyone suggested this before, but I think that if we couldn’t get groups to donate what the children needs, we might as well try to tailor make teaching materials for the children. I’ve talked to Pastor Fred few days before and he mentioned that the children are currently learning English, Math, Social studies and Science. So I was thinking that we could divide in groups of four and design some materials that are suitable for kindergarten and primary level.

I believe that the task would take around three to four weeks. I hope that we could get together to discuss the progress each week and see whether the contents are suitable for the student’s needs.

Let me hear what you guys think.

Hi Ray there are already many organisations that can help us with creating curriculum & teaching materials for Zabef children. I don't believe we would need to start from scrtach. There are also many on-line books and other educational resources on-line as well.
I don't know of them personally because I have not investigated these beofre (except on-line books) however I know that a few other villages and facilitators have gone down this path.
Some suggestions would be To see if we can get our hands on the Ugandan infant school curriclum. I would assume one would exist...the minsitry of education would be the first step. I'll have a look this weekend and see what I can find.

I agree that there are a lot of materials online, but what I would like to do is to make some stuff that are handy and more suitable for the children as I think that materials from different countries differ in their level. I'll also look into the ministry as well.

Doesn't Uganda have required textbooks for teaching specific subject areas there? In order for the school to be a registered school in Uganda, do you need to be using the approved text books and materials?

I've not managed to find any downloadable/printable texts for the children as yet... but found this website that provides resources for primary-level teachers - http://www.tessafrica.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4...
Site provides free print and audio materials in areas of 1.literacy, 2.numeracy, 3.science, 4.art/social studies and 5.life skills. Think this resource will be helpful as a supplement to the actual & main curriculum that is taught & text books/materials that are distributed to the students in the government aided schools. I'll keep searching these texts..hope to find something by end of this week.

Problem is, their website doesn't seem updated. Can't get further details except for their contact - http://www.ncdc.go.ug/contacts.html. Perhaps Paster Fred can contact them? Or visit even? They are in Kampala.

Hi Fel, great research and great results! Many thanks. I think the best thing regarding gathering teaching materials would be to pick and choose from some of the sites you have discovered and also for Pastor fred to speak with some authority in the education sector about the set curriculum. As Barbara points out- we can't just make this stuff up- there has to be a basic set of curriculum that is required in Ugandan schools.
