Hi everyone, I'm Ray from Hong Kong. I've been talking to Romina and Pastor Fred for some time and I basically understand the basic situation that the village faces. I hope that we could all go along well together. Let me talk a bit more about myself. I did my degree in International Studies focusing in the East Asian area. During my years in university, I've volunteered for some time in UNHCR Hong Kong Sub-office and Caritas Hong Kong serving some refugees and asylum seekers. I enjoy a lot in helping people that are in need and therefore, I've changed to do more social work related work and now working in New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association which aims to help mental illness clients to lead a better life. I think that's what I've been doing in recent years, and I hope I could contribute something here to improve the lives of the children and widows in our village.

Dear Pastor Fred, Ray, and Everyone :)

I recently joined an organisation called Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) at my university: www.sife.vu.nl.

In a nutshell, the aim of the organisation is for students to identify needs in society, educate people in enterprenueship and get results from it. I thought of Zabef immediately because I have a bit of knowledge about how people are affected and how we may be of help.

I am thinking of a 1 or 2 year project workng with HIV positive widows, or if discrimination is an issue, we can just work with widows. Because we have to come up with a budget and a proper proposal to get funding there are quite a number of questions I need answered but this is the approach I intend to follow:
1. People, people, people. To know who they are, what they are passionate about, what they dream about, what they are capable of and if they are aware of the huge potential that lies in them.
2. What they want: Pastor Fred has talked at length about the needs that exist there, but because I am making people my primary concern, I would like to know, all things being equal, what they want to do to help themselves and their families.
3. What they need: this is not always the same as what they want. My theory is that once you understand more about people and their culture, get insight into what they want, your perception of their needs might actually be different from what it would have been if you had not sought out the first 2.
4. Aligning needs and wants to educate and empower people to do projects that they will be able to sustain and have a sense of ownership over. Such projects should have a much greater chance of continued existence and success long after we are gone.

This is all still in its preliminary stages, and I cannot make any promises but I am keen to push through and get the results that I want. If successful, I'll be working with a team of 4 other students from my university and we will have to split tasks and nag a few people every once in a while. Also note that SIFE does not offer funding for charity, but does help in as far as creating opportunities for people is concerned. We can partner with other organisations along the way though, so limitless possibilites exist.

My most pressing questions right now are:
- Would this be a welcome project in Zabef if we did manage to get funding for the research?
- What channel of communication are we supposed to follow especailly during the early stages when we need to get a lot of information? (We'll be all over the place and will probably need to talk to EVERYONE)
- Would it be possible for me to establish relationships with a few women in the village? This is particularly important for me in terms of getting to understand these women better.

I am currently busy with exams but in a week I will have my freedom again and perhaps we can talk about it at length then and maybe then I can give something more concrete if none of this is making sense.

Kind Regards,

Nonhlanhla
