Make a list of the bare necessities a school needs
Status:

A school needs many things. What are they? Books, desks, etc.
The only person who knows this is Jegan. Who will be the lucky nabuur to ask him?
A person with good journalism skills would be suitable for this task. Of course, you'll have to contact him and ask him the questions. Best use email to do so. Then post the results of your interview on the site. Based on this information we can start searching for the materials, or for organizations that might donate them. :-)

Jegan,
Do you have internet connection at school? Some of the tools/textbooks are online...Can you access them from school or do you need to print everything out (get a hard copy) to give to the kids?
Tanja
Good morning neighbors,
Estelle, can you give me an update on your conversation with Room to Read? I want to start contacting organizations to make sure that the kids will have everything they need for the next year. Let's broaden the scope of the research- let's look not only for textbooks, but also learning games and tools ( similar Leaping Frog series).
Jegan,
What are the three things that the children need the most?
Best regards,
Tanja

Hello,
A school also needs desks and chairs. One good way of finding them would be to ask the schools in the district if they have any old furnishings that they don't need. Sometimes they have old desks that may have a broken leg or arm, and these could be easily repaired, then repainted or varnished for use.
The same holds true for school books. School districts sometimes order books from publishers in bulk, that is they say that they need a certain amount. Sometimes, there are books left over, because there aren't that many students. What happens to these? Ask the school officials if they have any surplus books that they'd be willing to donate to the evening school, do the same with local book stores. Or even ask older children who have finished school if they can donate books. This could also be a good charity event for schools. It doesn't cost anything, and can be a good source of material.
"One man's garbage, is another man's treasure."
It is alot easier to get materials from local sources, than from outside, because you don't have to worry about shipping and transport costs or taxes, which can sometimes be expensive. Remember this is just the beginning.
Hello,
I have compiled a list of book publishers that have offices in India. they have both childrens books and adult books, as well as school course books- according to ciriculum standards in area- in both Tamil and Hindu, as well as English. Many times these publishers have surplus stock of books that are unsold because every year they publish new books. They may be willing to donate some books to the school as this would create a good image of the company.
I'm a teacher and often buy books from them, also as a member of a teachers association, I can perhaps influence them to donate some books for the children. This is the time of year when everybody starts preparing for the new school year. A good time to start. Will keep everybody informed as to progress.
