International volunteer day

International Volunteer Day takes place on December 5th each year. This day is officially recognized by the United Nations. On this day volunteers around the world are recognized and celebrated for their dedication and contributions. International Volunteer Day is established by the United Nations on December 17th 1985.

The organized events are led by International Volunteer Day committees, comprising partners from the United Nations system, governments and individuals.

What is International Volunteer Day?

International Volunteer Day offers the an opportunity for individual volunteers and volunteer organizations to make their contributions visible. As well at local, national as international level, to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
The Millennium Development Goals are:

  • Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • Achieve universal primary education
  • Promote gender equality & empower women
  • Reduce child moralist
  • Improve maternal health
  • Fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  • Ensure environmental sustainability
  • Develop a global partnership for development

Never-ending day

It is very difficult to encourage more people to volunteer. If you think about the committed work of volunteers all around the globe, International Volunteer Day is a day that actually never ends.
