Tsunami 2004 in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand

The areas that were most wounded by the tsunami of 2004, that caused many casualties, are situated in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Indonesia

Indonesia is situated nearby the epicenter with one of the biggest islands of Indonesia: Sumatra. The district Atjeh is the most damages district. According to the authorities, more than 94.000 people died in Indonesia. But they fear even more dead people because a lot of man, women and children are still missing.

Big parts of Atjeh are completely vanished. Even the capital of the district is ruined for over 80%. At the Indonesian island Java; most of the people do not even know what has happened at Sumatra. The tsunami did not hit Java.

Sri Lanka

After Indonesia, Sri Lanka is the most damaged area. Hospitals got overcrowded and could not handle all the incoming wounded people. The official number of dead people is 28.000 but also in Sri Lanka there are a lot of people still missing. 14.000 people are unknown to be still alive or not. The tsunami in Sri Lanka also took a big other problem along: landmines. These mines where during the civil war dug in the beach sand and now came ashore. This caused extra danger.

Thailand

In Thailand mainly the west coast got hit hard. The earthquake was felt even in Bangkok. Around the same time the tsunami raged another, light, earthquake took place in the district Chiang Mai. In Thailand approximately 4500 people died, including some tourists who were spending their holiday in the area.
