Secretarial services: how can we get a photo copier in Jinja?

Status: In progress
Step:
1

In order to raise some money for support we want to start offering secretarial services. One item that is needed is a photo copier. What would be the best way to get it?

Team Jinja Central - in pole position as always: and first to pass the chequered flag too! Brillant - quick off the mark always. :)

Stay blessed, Jennifer, Paul and Paul. And regards to all our neighbours, too!!!

Best wishes,
Kofi.

Paul-

Do you happen to know anyone involved with the local Rotary or Lion's club? It looks like for both you need the support of the membership, so we would need to get you connected with someone involved in one or both of these organizations.

Hello Jennifer ,
If there is a way that you can help me get connected to the organizations you are talking about i will be very grateful.
Yes there are some friends out there who are willing to help but things in Uganda work differently and you find that we have not gt what we need for are long time.
So friends and neighbours who are willing to help please help me understand what i can do.
I need your guidance to see that we can get our success

Hi Paul

Do you have any idea how much income the photocopier will create for the centre?

This will be useful information for you when working out how to cover running costs. May also help when looking for funding if you can show that there will be a very clear benefit from having the machine.

Hi Paul

Do you think that, if you have a photocopier at the training centre, people will come and use it, and how much money is it likely to will make? Or will they prefer to go somewhere else where they can get other things done too at the same time?

Am interested to hear how things are going at the centre - are your members doing well at the computer training, and is it leading to jobs for any of them? And are you running training for paying customers as well as for your members?

Do you still hope to provide internet access in the future? And have you done any work to look at how practical this will be (number of computers you have, disruption of training activities), likely costs, and income?

What I am trying to work out is what your plans are for making the centre as self-sufficient as possible, and whether the photocopier will be a good start to that.

I am not sure where you will get money from. From what you have said, you have tried locally but not been successful. Which suggests you will have to look further afield.

Did you ever contact any of the Ugandan disability organisations or IT-related networks and computer centres I gave you details of a while ago, and were they able to offer any advice on funding?

One answer may be for a neighbour, or group of neighbours, who can do some personal fundraising. put on an event etc (sorry, not me!).

The other is to find some organisations who accept applications for this kind of thing. There are lots out there who might potetially be interested, but each one will receive hundreds of applications, so you need to find a way to make yours stand out from the crowd.

I know you focus on providing services to people with disabilities, also to vulnerable young people e.g. orphans. How many of the leaders, committee etc of BEHOD are themselves disabled? I ask as some organisations will support projects only if the majority of those running the project have disabilities, or are family of children who do.

Apologies for providing more questions than answers!

Hi Mary,
Thank you for these good questions am blessed that whenever you ask these questions it gives me work and to think beyond so my dear friend reserve your apology its ok.
We think if we have the photocopier it will help us to generate some income for the center even now some people need the services but we can't provide it.
The center is doing fine we started the school on Monday 6/10/2008 and we had a review of what has been achieved am happy to tell you that every body was very hapy with the developments.
We are very anxious to have the internet cafe' as it will be a very big source of income to the center.
so we still have the hope to install it.
Yes have tried to contact some people IT to seek for advise and help but it is slow have not got replies as yet but we are still patient.
Of the group i work with all the people are disabled except two of us who are not and the majority PWDs.
and this center the majority are PWDs.
Thank you for the questions Mary

Hi Paul

Thanks for the answers and good to hear your students are enjoying the training!

Finding any sort of funding is always the hardest thing. I see that you are taking part in a conference that Nabuur are involved with tomorrow. Maybe you will find some good contacts along the way.

I think you have already made quite a few friends in Dutch groups, are any of them likely sources of funding?

You will have seen my big list of organisations that accept applications for funding, and BEHOD may meet some of their criteria. But the big challenge is that they will all get hundreds (maybe thousands) of applications each year and can only provide money to a very small number of these. If you can find out where other groups of disabled people in your area have got money from, that may be a quicker and simpler route, especially of the funders have offices in your area or somewhere in Uganda.

Hi Pelle

On the Partners page http://www.nabuur.com/en/partners is an organisation called Close The Gap http://www.close-the-gap.org

Is there any possibility that they would be able to help BEHOD with making the computer center self-sufficient? It looks like their main function is to supply computers, but am wondering if they provide more general advice and assistance too?
