Securing land for the school

Status: Just started
Step:
3

The school stands to be in need of its own land to build up classes which can ease the poor conditioned structure that children are learning from at the moment Neighbours can look into this fact and find out possible ways of raising funds to purchase land and build our own school which can later or sooner serve a full primary school. In Kenya a full primary school needs up to eleven rooms.

The vulnerable children from desperately poor families often attend the existing school to get food which keeps them off the street. 2. POTENTIAL SOURCE OF FUNDS FOR MAIN PROJECT. You already own a second piece of land 30ft x 50ft a few kilometres from Mathare. Your thoughts are to develop this to provide funds for the above project, either by: a). Building a fee paying primary school. A two storey school here would cost 3,000,000 KES (US$40,000) to build. Parents in this area can afford to pay school fees. b). Developing the land in some other way (eg Hospital). Neighbours suggestions are needed here. You have also suggested that purchasing a Maize Grinding Mill for 200,000 KES (US$2,700) and charging families to use it could be a source of funds. With the above in mind, I have a few questions. 1. Have you identified a suitable plot for a new school ? I understood that the land where the Mathare slum is located is illegally occupied by people so presumably identifying a suitable plot to purchase will not be easy. 2. Have you considered purchasing any existing buildings which may be converted? I ask this as it may be easier for neighbours to get behind such a tangible project. The photo which I sent was of a nearby building that had potential for conversion and also a plot for sale next to it. 3. Who else locally do you have to assist you with this project and what support do you have from the community? I think neighbours need to have much more information about the support that the project has locally before they can advise on fund raising etc. It would be helpful if other teachers would come forward to show their support and you could organise yourselves into a structured group. With your work commitments it will be difficult for you to oversee this project on your own. 4. What is the up to date situation at the school? In May you reported you were running short of food from local donors; has this improved? Could we have a photo of the existing school so we can better understand the situation? Maria recently forwarded some advice on ways to set up a sponsorship scheme for the children, have you followed this up? I hope some of these points will encourage other neighbours to become involved in the discussion. Hi Richard and everyone,

Thanks to Vijai I think we have a clear understanding of the situation.

To summarise;

1. MAIN PROJECT.

As the present school at Mathare Education Centre, is on rented land from the government and under threat of closure, it is your hope to purchase another piece of land nearby and build a new primary school. The vulnerable children from desperately poor families often attend the existing school to get food which keeps them off the street.

2. POTENTIAL SOURCE OF FUNDS FOR MAIN PROJECT.

You already own a second piece of land 30ft x 50ft a few kilometres from Mathare.
Your thoughts are to develop this to provide funds for the above project, either by:

Regards Shaun

Personally I live in Kayole a distance of about four kilometres from Mathare and I attend church in Mathare and that is why we started this project together with other church members who reside in Mathare.Currently we are running the school right from the church premises which is a rental one and in the process the church is the community trying to help in meeting some of the expenses such as rent bills.Since the church is not well designed to serve as a school, we are improvising by using the open spaces next to the church and other classrooms are rented in different structures nearby. So we are not together on a one building but we are scattered in different plots were we have managed to secure rooms. This actually does not make us look like a school but we are managing. On your question about securing land, it is true getting land in this area is quite hard but given time we can get one although it is very costly in this area since it is near the city centre and the population is high.I have been trying to find out who the owner of the bulding in the photo you send is but I have been told that he resides out of the city and so I am yet to make arrangement of meeting him to know if he can be willing to sell it out to us, I will give you a feedback in the shortest time possible. If given time to find out land or finished building to purchase, I know we can find one however the prices are very high. The situation now is not very encouraging to the learners because we have no food left in our stock and wellwishers who give us assistance tend to send in help after realising good returns from their bussiness. This has to bring a negative impact as learnes don't attend classes daily and some end up in wrong places and activities. This is one of the areas that calls for quick attention. On Maria's suggestion for a sponsorship program, indeed I welcome it because if pupils can have sponsors, they will be able to cater for the needs of the pupils and work can run smoothly and this can encourage the children to stick at school always.I have to come up with our website but it all needs money to have one at the end.At the moment I have no money as I have to pay for my january bills for my children. My wife who is working has been the main support of this work with afew members of the church but the community can bearly help nothing because it is apoor one. Hope with these few highlights you can be able to give me the next step and where you need clarification, feel free to ask. Hi Shaun,
Kindly accept my apology for being late to reply your querries.I was trying to gather some information about the plot next to the one you sent me before I could return to you.

We now have a better understanding of the school situation and the support you have. As you say, everything comes down to funds. I am sure you will be aware of the Matopeni Community project as it is in Kayole (see website http://www.bostonchildrencentre.org/) It seems to me that they faced similar problems to Mathare but are now well advanced on a school building project, school meals and child sponsorship programme.I would urge you to have a look at the Matopeni "Resources" section on Nabuur which gives some good information applicable to your aims. You will see that in order to generate funds they had to set up certain basics; 1. A structured working group which can be identified by potential donors. In your case this may well be the group of church members you mention or like minded teachers. You will need a chairperson (? yourself) and identifiable people prepared to take some responsibility for actions. Donors are more likely to donate to a well organised group. 2. Select a name for the project and get it registered as a CBO (Community Based Organisation) with the local government. You will see the certificate they obtained here; http://www.nabuur.com/files/attach/2008/07/task/doc_47345b59942ec.jpg 3.By setting up a CBO you will be in a better position to apply for funds with organisations such as Give Meaning. Have a look at http://www.givemeaning.com/project/matopeni where you will see that their application shares many of your objectives. 4. Set up a bank account in the name of the CBO and indicate how any donors may make payments. 5. Prioritise your aims and set up a detailed budget to attain them. In your case you may feel the food project / maize milling is most important. Here is a typical Matopeni budget http://www.nabuur.com/files/attach/2008/07/task/doc_47ada2d151db1.doc The above steps do not cost a lot. If you back them up with a couple of photos as well you will attract more neighbours to the project. This must be your first aim as many neighbours have vast experience of making a project successful. I hope any neighbours reading this will contribute with some constructive suggestions/criticism. Am I being too simplistic? Or is there a better route? In my experience, it is vital when applying to organisations for funds that there is complete transparency and accountability. I consider the above points essential in order to achieve this. Cheers Shaun [teaser] => Hi Richard, Thank you for your answers. Hi Richard,

Thank you for your answers. We now have a better understanding of the school situation and the support you have.
As you say, everything comes down to funds.
I am sure you will be aware of the Matopeni Community project as it is in Kayole (see website http://www.bostonchildrencentre.org/) It seems to me that they faced similar problems to Mathare but are now well advanced on a school building project, school meals and child sponsorship programme.I would urge you to have a look at the Matopeni "Resources" section on Nabuur which gives some good information applicable to your aims. You will see that in order to generate funds they had to set up certain basics;

1. A structured working group which can be identified by potential donors. In your case this may well be the group of church members you mention or like minded teachers. You will need a chairperson
(? yourself) and identifiable people prepared to take some responsibility for actions.
Donors are more likely to donate to a well organised group.

2. Select a name for the project and get it registered as a CBO (Community Based Organisation) with the local government. You will see the certificate they obtained here; http://www.nabuur.com/files/attach/2008/07/task/doc_47345b59942ec.jpg

3.By setting up a CBO you will be in a better position to apply for funds with organisations such as Give Meaning.
