Setting up a Feeding Program for the students

As the learning centre works with children from poor families the centre has found a feeding program necessary to draw attention of these children to school.Many of these children have no food in their homes making it hard for them to carry on with learning on empty stomachs.This has discouraged some of them to go on to fend food rather than keeping at school.
Although a feeding program is one of the expensive exercise to manage but we can think of the best way to sustain it.The local representative has found it good if a maize grinding mill can be purchased by neighbours and it can serve the purpose of grinding maize locally for the school and serving the area residents who will come to grind their maize on payment.Since maize flour is the staple food in Kenya this can be an income generating activity which can sustain the feeding program and save neighbours from such a recurring exercise.This can demand Kshs 200,000 and it can serve the feeding program very well

As with every grant-making organisation, they get lots of applications so cannot fund them all, but may be worth a try if any of your needs meet their funding criteria.

Thanks again to remember about your involvement in the next farming project.Already this is the time to work on the initial stages of farming which have to start with renting land.This is the time for renting land where as the next stage will be ploughing which comes in Mid March.Remember the cost for the entire exercise of farming 3 acres is projected to be $945 US Dollars.If you can remmit the initial money needed for renting land now, then the next money will be needed in early March.I will be going to the farming site within this week so as to finish up with the land owners and if it were possible for you,I will be able to complete this work all at once.Let me know from you.

Hi all,
Happy New Year!I hope it is well with all of you.We are going on smoothly with schooling having resumed from early this month.Children have kept their pace by resuming learning as usual and I believe with the much support they received last year and to crown it all,the X-mas party that was organised from school have captured their school attention and they have come with readiness of learning and without wasting of time, teachers have started with what they have schemed.
I should also let you know that we have now rented 3 acres piece of land for our next farming project which is due in March.We are however making some land preparation prior to planting.The much needed help is how we can expand the farm by renting more land as the number of children is increasing day after day.We also remain with the need to meet the costs of seeds,fertilizers and labor.At the moment we have not secured any funds for carrying on with the remaining stages of the crops.We intend to grow beans and maize which will help sustain the school feeding programme for next year 2013.

I hope you mark off the farm in beds and use organic methods as I have emailed you. You need buy only seed; nothing else. Buy legume seed for fertilizer making.
I have suggested that you grow endamame. Have the people eaten spaghetti? Do they like it? Have you found endamame seed? Try to find spaghetti squash seed. Grow spaghetti. Try and find baby maize seed. You eat the cob and all. Very good.

Hi all,
Again receive our warm greetings.We jut want to update you on the work done for the 2012 projects for the Patmos care and development centre.Together we are working on 9 school projects which include;crop farming,school feeding program,posho mill,chidren sponsorhip,school furniture and stationery,school water tank,school latrine,goat project and school building.To date the running projects include;crop farming,school feeding program and goat project.The rest of the projects has had little or nothing done on them while some are imminent.
In our report today, we want to update you that first term has gone and second term commences on 7th May.We were very great full to the volunteers who stood with us last term thereby making the work easy for the teachers and children.The school performance at the end of the term has revealed that drastic improvements are showing up while children have embarked on their studies in a very pleasing manner.The school feeding program was made able to run all through out the term as there was enough food for the children.This was as a result of the maize/beans farming done last year.The goats project has seen a total of 17 children now having school uniform while another set of children are soon having theirs ready.Maize farming for this year has kicked off having ploughed and planted 4 acres. Just a week ago one of our nanny goats has delivered giving rise to 7 goats in total .The winter shed for the goats have also been completed giving proper shelter and security to the goats.The posho mill is imminent upon securing a suitable premises.
While school resumes learning from 7th May,we are not so sure of securing another set of stationery to be used by the children.Children are also in need of school sweators as winter has began.
We will keep you updated in the progress on every project as we move on.We are also great full to every little contribution you are making to push these projects forward.Continue to be part of those who are interested in making a change to the lives of children in Mathare slums.View photos below.
