Ken,

the community got the seed and the DVDs, but the season is over and Guillaume said he estimated that the irrigation could not be used. He said that the soil is not appropriate for that (I don't quite understand why, not that much knowledge about agriculture, but I'll ask for any info you might need), and that it would be expensive and requires a lot of work (digging)...
So he thinks it's the best if they don't take a risk with the seed that is precious for them. Also he says the water must be brought every day early in the morning so he thinks it could be risky as well...

But Raul claims that it should not be the problem with raised bed and pipes for irrigation. Can you please advise us about what to do? Do you think drip irrigation should work everywhere regardless conditions? If yes, can you please explain us how to do that?

Maybe waiting for September is not too much time, but I hoped they could cultivate even out of the season and that way have the food both for themselves and for sale.
Do you think it would be posible?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello everyone,

At the moment I am unable to go to the internet very often but will still try to check every time I can.

I am sure Ken can explain better so look forward to his explanation.

The seed can be planted now and irrigated or wait until the rains begin.

Bucket irrigation is so simple. Purchase or make a 33 m. dripline. Connect it to a bucket, at least one meter above the ground, run a tube from the bucket to the dripline and sypon the water into the dripline. Put 20 liters in the AM and 20 liters in the PM. The next day put it on another row of vegetables. Irrigate every other day. Can use that same dripline to irrigate other rows during the day.

During the dry season is when crop prices are highest and the village will have vegetables to sell and no other one does. That is profitable.

Add organic materials to the rows by growing green manure crops or from other places [weeds/no seed, grass, etc.as mulch.

This is done in every country and is extremely successful. Makes farming profitable.

I have been in one place that the villagers refused to carry water to irrigate. Done in over 150 countries.

Ken thanks a lot.

I spoke to Guillaume yesterday and he's eager to learn how to do that and implement it. He'll also ask James, LR of Kagitumba, Rwanda, for advice since they implemented it successully in their village.

I am sure bucket drip irrigation will make a big difference for Walungu :-)

best regards,
Sonja

Sorry for not being more expeditive in writing, it's been a bit hectic for me these days. I will send you an email with project details as soon as possible.

The attached proposal is for another village as an example or template for Walungu - we still don't have our proposal drafted.

Thanks again for helping us. All the best,

Dear Sonja

I have gone through the details of the project.

I found 2 things-

1)Cultivation

2)Livestock details.

As you will be sending to 2 different organisations,do you want the project poposal to b 2 or 1?

As far my knowledge goes,i think it will be good ,if 2 different proposals are made.

What do you think?

Best regards,
Sushmita,
